10 December 2008 -- Religion and Clinical Ethics in Canada: Key Considerations and Recommendations in the Wake of the Golubchuk Case
Robert Mundle, BMus, MDiv, STM, PhD (Candidate)
Abstract: The case of Samuel Golubchuk, the elderly Orthodox Jewish man who died June 24, 2008 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg amidst an ethical and legal dispute between his family and the hospital, received national attention and exemplifies a number of significant challenges facing clinical ethicists in Canada today in regard to the role of religion in ethical decision-making. After first outlining the basic facts of the case and surveying the diversity of responses the case received from various commentators, including medical, religious (Jewish and Roman Catholic), legal, and secular, this presentation will argue that communication between clinicians and patients and their families lies at the heart of this case and others like it. The presentation will conclude by addressing the importance of talking about religion in clinical practice, with practical resources and recommendations for ethicists to improve communication with patients and their families regarding religious issues and concerns.
